The rise in the number of shack fires have local residents of Walvis Bay concerned on what the municipality is doing to address the problem.
Four shacks caught fire on Sunday, 20 March, at around 15h30, at Kuisebmond.
The owners of the shack where the fire started left for the weekend on Saturday and when the fire started on the inside neighbours could not get access to the shack,
The fire spread to the three other shacks, of which only one shack owner managed to carry out his belongings.
The fire brigade arrived at around 16h30 when the fire had already consumed the shacks. The cause of the fire could not be established immediately, but the fire brigade suspected electrical wiring inside the shack caused it.
“The National Housing Enterprise (NHE) should start distributing the houses that are standing empty since 2013 and are being vandalised, as there is an increment in shack fires here at Walvis Bay. What are they waiting for?” said a resident.
